A wealth of wood engravings The society was founded in 1920 by a group of artists including Eric Gill and Lucien Pissarro and its members today include some of the world’s finest printmakers.
A display about the technique of wood engraving including tools, woodblocks and proof prints will also be on show. This is the second time Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Victoria Art Gallery has chosen to host the Society’s annual exhibition after a successful visit in 1998. Jon Benington, Curator of the Victoria Art Gallery, said: “Bath & North East Somerset Council is delighted to welcome the Society of Wood Engravers back to the Victoria Art Gallery. “Wood engraving is a very time consuming and intricate art and the prints on display at this exhibition will highlight some of the world’s best wood engravings, woodcuts and linocuts. “Artists local to the Bath area who will be exhibiting included Simon Brett, Howard Phipps, Julian Poole, Peter Reddick and Sarah van Niekerk. “There will be around 130 works on display ranging from plant and animal studies to landscapes, figures and abstracts – something for everyone. Most of the prints will be for sale and can be supplied in time for Christmas.” Hilary Paynter, Chairman of the Society, will be visiting the Gallery tomorow (Saturday, November 13) from 10.30am-4pm to give a demonstration of wood engraving.
