Three hundred years of life in the Pump Room. 26/04/2006 [42]
Each talk will focus on one century of the history and development of the Pump Room. They will introduce not only the Pump Room, but the people and ideas that have shaped one of Bath’s best known buildings. The talks will be extensively illustrated and include many images not previously shown in public. On Wednesday 3 May at 1.10pm architectural historian and local history researcher, Jane Root, will look at the 18th century, a time which saw many changes reflecting widespread aspirations and fears. Susan Fox, Collections Manager at the Pump Room and Roman Baths focuses on the 19th century on Wednesday 10 May at 1.10pm. Much less is known about this period in the Pump Room’s history but change, both physical and social, continued at a rapid pace. The spotlight is thrown on the 20th century by Stephen Clews, Pump Room and Roman Baths Manager on Wednesday 17 May, also at 1.10pm. The 20th century saw radical changes in both its use and the social and economic environment in which it operated. All three talks take Place in the Banqueting Room, The Guildhall, Bath from 1.10 – 1.50pm. Light refreshments are available beforehand from 12.30pm. Entry to the talks is free but there will be a discretionary collection to help defray the cost of the talks.
